Evidence and Revision Review Cards

Audience / fit: Grade 6 ELA
Teaching or planning target: Sixteen short-response revision cards; use a selection with the recording sheet and explanatory key.
Essential prerequisites: Students have practiced the evidence and revision move on the selected card; choose a few cards rather than handing out all sixteen at once.
Preparation: About 12 minutes.
Use time: About 40 minutes. Planning estimate for four selected cards at about five minutes each plus time to introduce, compare, and discuss revisions; not classroom-tested. Use all sixteen over multiple sessions.
Materials: Printed learner cards, cut apart if desired. One recording sheet per learner or established response route.

Start with cards 1–2 and the matching recording page. Choose later pairs separately. The recording page has blank rows for four cards; it does not reveal the other cards. These are review activities, not a fresh standardized assessment.

Learners will improve a short response by adding relevant evidence, explaining its connection to a point, narrowing a claim to match evidence, or removing/replacing unsupported or off-topic material.

Support and adaptation

Read one card aloud or use text-to-speech, let the learner mark one relevant detail, and allow dictation or an established communication route. Keep the same revision and evidence goal.

Extension

Invite learners to write a second defensible revision and compare which version most directly answers the question. Treat this as additional practice, not a norm-referenced score.

Choose a next move

Choose a route that fits the response and your teaching goal. These are links to materials already supplied, not a prescribed sequence or a placement decision.

Evidence Paragraphs: Check, Respond and Revise — After these cards have been used as practice, use the separate short check and follow-up tasks when they remain unseen.
Write an Evidence-Based Paragraph — When a response lacks a supported answer and explanation, use the paragraph lesson.
Revise a Paragraph for Clarity and Coherence — When meaning is present but references or order obscure it, use the revision lesson.

Save follow-up passages until students are ready to try them on their own. Once a passage has been shown, modeled or practiced, use it for practice. Keep answer keys with the teacher and use each resource’s own learning target and criteria.
