Thermal Energy Session Routes
Is this the right resource?
- Audience / fit
- Intended Grade 6 science; selected Grades 6–8 standards ideas
- Teaching or planning target
- Plan a six-session paper route or an eight-session route with practical continuation points, prerequisites and selected pages to print.
- Essential prerequisites
- Choose a route using prior responses and the named prerequisites. Practical continuation requires checked equipment and adult supervision.
- Preparation
- Read the supplied teacher quick start; preparation time depends on the selected route.
- Use time
- Six supplied-data sessions or eight sessions with practical continuation; use the selected kit’s time estimates.
- Materials
- The route and print guide and selected student/teacher files; paper and pencil for supplied data. Practical equipment and checks are in the operational card.
- What to print
- Print the teacher starting or route guide, then use the direct per-session handouts and matching teacher directions below. Print stages separately; complete keys and later assessments remain with the teacher.
Choose the science session route
Choose a route using prior student responses. Each session below has direct student handouts and matching teacher directions. Give new evidence only after retaining the initial response. Several sessions need supervised continuation; eight practical sessions do not mean eight 45-minute periods.
Compare thermal data and limit a claim
AI-assisted teaching materials.
Edition 1.0.0 · United States Grade 6; selected middle-school science ideas. A complete paper lesson connects reading a temperature table and graph to a design choice supported by repeated comparisons.
- Target
- Compare matched temperature results, use an energy-transfer explanation and limit the design claim to the supplied evidence.
- Prerequisites
- Read whole-number temperatures and subtract start and endpoint values. The supplied bridge models these moves.
- Preparation, duration and materials
- Paper and pencil; optional calculator or number line. Use the teacher quick start to select stages. All timing guidance is an estimate; no classroom timing or apparatus trial is claimed.
Preview a model task
Fresh 100 g water samples begin at 10 degrees Celsius in a 22-degree room. Use the model table and graph to find the 20-minute temperature increase of each setup. Which sleeve better limits warming in this one constructed trial? Revise the claim that it stopped all energy transfer.
All results are constructed teaching data, not measured product performance. This paper route requires no heating, handling of hot water or physical equipment.

For the first response, cover the lower worked bridge on page 1 until the response is collected, then reveal it. If the whole page has already been seen, use that first response as practice. Keep teacher answers and later checks separate from ordinary student handouts. Use a response lesson and another learning opportunity before the different later check. The checks have different demands and are not calibrated forms.

Paper session 1: Read measurements · PDF (1 page) · Paper session 1: Read measurements · editable Word · Paper session 1: Read measurements · browser copy
Use Keep readings in one row if values are mixed; use A value is not a change if the final value is reported as the change. Keep the Later assessment unseen. The original Quick Check repeats this independent task.
Session 2: Evaluate comparison conditions
35–45 minutes (planning estimate).
Evidence of accurate start/final/change reading from session 1, or the included prerequisite bridge.
Paper session 2: Evaluate comparison conditions · PDF (1 page) · Paper session 2: Evaluate comparison conditions · editable Word · Paper session 2: Evaluate comparison conditions · browser copy
Choose Repair the comparison for a confound, or Specify a usable plan for a missing procedure. Do not treat a repaired paper plan as a completed physical experiment.
Session 3: Support a design choice with trials
36–44 minutes (planning estimate).
Read temperature changes and identify comparable conditions. Use the bridge if entering directly.

Session 6: Assemble and run three first comparisons
75–95 minutes plus adult preparation; continue after trial 1 when needed (planning estimate).
Accurate decimal °C/time reading; calculate change; measure 150 mL; follow the matched-pair and probe-position procedure. Carry forward the preceding session evidence. The adult must check the current complete operational guide, equipment and room/water conditions before handling.
Practical session 6: Assemble and run three first comparisons · PDF (1 page) · Practical session 6: Assemble and run three first comparisons · editable Word · Practical session 6: Assemble and run three first comparisons · browser copy
Complete pre/post-phase instrument checks and the printed probe/position alternation; display resolution is not accuracy. Retain failed starts and inconclusive trials. A room shift over 1 °C, missing 0/10 reading or changed procedure requires a flag, not invented correction. Between trials, the teacher drains, checks dry sleeves, conditions interiors with room-temperature water for 5 minutes, drains/dries and prepares fresh water. If stopping after F1, clean/store dry labelled sleeves and finish F2/F3 in another supervised block before redesign. No equipment homework.
Session 7: Commit the redesign and start retesting
45–60 minutes; allow continuation and complete the first phase beforehand (planning estimate).
Accurate decimal °C/time reading; calculate change; measure 150 mL; follow the matched-pair and probe-position procedure. Carry forward the preceding session evidence. The adult must check the current complete operational guide, equipment and room/water conditions before handling. Three retained first-comparison records and the original construction version are required.

If any F trial is unfinished, continue that phase first. Do not count a proposed redesign as physically tested. At a break, drain/clean/store dry labelled versions; retain the R1 log. The next session completes R2–R3 with fresh pairs. Never substitute the fictional retest values for missing empirical readings.
Session 8: Finish retesting and explain the limits
50–65 minutes; add supervised continuation for delays or repeats (planning estimate).
Accurate decimal °C/time reading; calculate change; measure 150 mL; follow the matched-pair and probe-position procedure. Carry forward the preceding session evidence. The adult must check the current complete operational guide, equipment and room/water conditions before handling. Bring the original/redesign versions, retained proposal, first-phase records, R1 and the pre-phase instrument check.

Flag mismatch, drift, missing readings or wet/changed sleeves as the procedure requires. Clean up with the teacher. If safe equipment/conditions are unavailable, use the separate supplied-data Part 1 then Part 2 and identify the work as fictional-record analysis; it does not replace missing measured results or demonstrate construction/testing. Keep the later reasoning assessment reserved.
Learning target: Plan six supplied-data sessions or an eight-session route with practical continuation points.
Use written, oral or labeled representations when they show the intended reasoning. This resource addresses selected standards ideas; supplied-data analysis does not establish actual construction or testing.
Prerequisites: Use prior evidence named for each session. Kit bridges and the cool-water supplied-data alternative provide the referenced instruction; choose continuation points when practical repetitions need more time.
Materials: Paper and pencil; optional calculator, pointing, oral response or labeled representation.
Data values are created for teaching. Use the teacher guide to plan the lesson timing.
