Prepare cover work in three steps

  1. Choose one familiar reading activity: Print the summary activity · PDF (3 pages) or Print the character-change activity · PDF (4 pages). Each has its passage, writing space and an early-finisher task.
  2. Open the matching teacher notes below. Keep answers with the adult; tell the substitute what support is authorized and how finished work is returned.
  3. Adapt the fictional handoff example · PDF (4 pages). Replace every schedule, attendance, contact, routine and support detail with verified local information.

If students have seen Notice Board or Anika, use the activity as familiar practice. It is not a fresh check. Leave only the chosen student copy and the adult handoff.

Where to start

Choose the branch that matches your immediate need. Open individual resource pages for the student materials and separate teacher guidance; you do not have to download the whole collection first.

  1. Substitute Handoff and Independent-Work Pack — Verify the actual schedule, routines, contacts, support and return process locally.
  2. Independent-use activities — Choose one of the complete independent-use activities below. Print the student copy and keep its teacher notes separate.
  3. Teach and Reteach Classroom Routines — Carry only established local routines into the handoff; this collection does not provide school procedures.

Individual independent-use files

Both independent activities include the reading text, response space and an early-finisher task. Replace the fictional handoff example with verified details for your class.

Summary activity

Character-change activity

Fictional completed handoff

The summary activity uses the Notice Board passage from the summary lesson; the character activity uses the Anika story from the character-change lesson. If students have already read either text, use the activity for practice. The summary lesson’s separate check also uses Notice Board, so choose one occasion for students to respond to it before seeing it elsewhere.

For another story after the character-change lesson or cover-work activity, use the separate character-change check and next-step tasks. Character Change: Check and Next Steps

Before use, replace and verify attendance, schedule, routines, materials, support and collection details through the local school handoff.

The lesson pages below contain the original teacher-led versions. Use the independent-use packets linked above or in the ZIP for cover work.

Connect the activity to your class day

Use the worked character-change handoff to name what to print, how students start, what to do when they finish and where work is returned. Complete local schedule, contact and routine information before handing it over.

Use the direction-planning example to prepare clear steps and authorized reading or response support. Keep answers with the adult, and note help given so the returning teacher can interpret the work.

About the materials

Use the editable files to adapt the materials to your learners and local curriculum.

Return to summary teaching after cover work

The summary activity above uses the original lesson’s Notice Board passage. If it reveals a teaching need, use the summary companion’s complete focused practice and choose a different check text students have not already seen after teaching. Its later texts and teacher answers belong with the teacher, rather than in the substitute practice packet.
