Equal Groups and Equal Shares: Before Ratios
Help students explain equal-group roles, distinguish times as much from more than, and show an equal share as a fraction of a measured unit. Includes visual models, guided practice, short checks and focused next tasks.
A focused mathematics sequence for selected Grades 5–6 learners. Build the meanings of groups, copies and fractional shares before teaching paired ratios or rates.
Where to start
- Name the group roles. Use the starting task, then Lesson 1 to distinguish the number of groups from the size of each group.
- Compare copies and differences. Use Lesson 2 to explain times as long and centimeters longer from the same baseline.
- Explain an equal measured share. Use Lesson 3’s fixed-unit diagrams to connect equal-sharing division with a fraction.
- Choose the next task. Read the separate check against each idea. Use the supplied focused practice and save the follow-up, later revisit and new-setting tasks for another learning opportunity.

Continue into ratios and unit rates
These lessons explain one quantity’s group and unit meanings. The existing ratio sequence teaches the additional two-quantity labels and relationship; per-one lessons then teach rate direction. Use each lesson’s own starting task and criteria.
- Equivalent Ratios: Scale Both Quantities — Teach two-quantity ratio labels and scaling after learners can explain one-quantity equal groups; use the ratio lesson’s own starting task.
- Find and Interpret “Per One” — After ratio prerequisites are ready, use the per-one lesson to teach the requested unit and direction; a fractional equal share alone does not establish rate reasoning.
- Check for Understanding and Choose the Next Step — Use a planning record for the actual group, comparison and measured-unit criteria supplied here.
- Substitute Handoff and Independent-Work Pack — Hand off familiar lesson practice with clear help directions, complete student pages and a return note; keep later checks with the teacher.
- Clear Directions and Language-Support Pack — Plan neutral directions, larger diagrams or an appropriate response mode while leaving the group role, multiplier and partition decisions to the learner.
- Unit Rates and Fair Comparisons — Continue through the ratio, per-one and fair-comparison sequence after teaching each additional demand.
- Equal Groups and Equal Shares: Before Ratios — Choose the starting task, teaching stage and complete classroom package.
