Grade 6 Reading: Check, Reteach & Recheck · All free resources

Use this pack after teaching students to connect a passage detail to a supplied claim. Give a short first check, teach the observed next step, and use a new scene to see the reasoning again.

Who it is for
Grade 6 ELA (provisional authoring target)
Text type
Five original fictional scenes
Preparation
About 3–5 minutes, estimated
Activity time
Check A and Recheck B: about 4–6 minutes each; focused reteach: about 8–12 minutes, estimated
Included
Five student stages, two teaching routes, answer guidance, alternatives, separate printable checks, shared guide and local planning record

Teacher quick start

  1. Print Check A. Confirm the learner can access the scene and prompt.
  2. Compare the response with the guide. Describe the detail and explanation actually present.
  3. If the detail is true but misses the claim, teach route A. If the detail fits but the explanation is absent, teach route B. Clarify a blank or uninterpretable response first.
  4. Use the Newspaper model and Lost Notebook guided practice. Then give the unseen Recheck B.
  5. Use Later Check C after another learning opportunity. Compare visible reasoning and conditions, not a mastery percentage.

Choose the next teaching move

True detail, weak match to the claim
Route A: compare the smiling photograph with the repair photograph, then compare the comet sticker with Inez's return action.
Relevant detail, missing connection
Route B: keep the detail and ask how it shows the claimed action or choice; then use the notebook scene for a new explanation.
Broad claim beyond the scene
Return to the supplied claim and identify what the scene leaves unknown.
Blank or unclear response
Check access, task understanding, time, and response conditions before selecting a content reteach.

Choose a next move

Choose a route that fits the response and your teaching goal. These are links to materials already supplied, not a prescribed sequence or a placement decision.

Check task exposure before using a follow-up as fresh evidence. A task or passage already shown, modeled or practiced is practice; the word “independent” alone does not make it fresh. Keep the destination resource’s target, criteria and access conditions. These checks are not diagnostic or validated equivalent forms.

Review and use

Version 0.1.1. Original fictional text. Independent blind AI review and separate AI instructional audit are recorded for this version; this is not human review, a classroom trial, or an effectiveness study. The three independent checks are fresh tasks, not validated equivalent forms.
