Engaging Classroom Review Games to Reinforce Student Learning

Plan a classroom review activity

Classroom review games are one possible retrieval or practice format. Use one only when its rules and scoring preserve the objective, every student has a valid response route, and the responses produce evidence that can guide the next instructional decision.

Competition and team structures can change participation in different ways. Define the target knowledge or reasoning, remove speed or public ranking when those features are irrelevant, and do not infer retention, motivation, or collaboration from participation alone.

Popular Review Game Formats

Review-game formats vary in pacing, response mode, competition, technology, and evidence quality. Select one only when those features fit the objective and access requirements. Examples include:

  • Quiz-show format: Jeopardy-inspired prompts or services such as Quizizz, Kahoot, Blooket, and Gimkit can present questions, but features and terms change. Use only district-approved tools after privacy, age, accessibility, advertising, account, and data-retention review; provide a non-digital and non-speeded response route.
  • Team format: Services such as Quizlet Live or Socrative may support group responses when approved under local privacy, age, account, and accessibility requirements. Define individual evidence and a non-public alternative; team participation does not establish collaboration or peer support.
  • Escape-room format: Digital or print puzzles can require students to retrieve content or explain reasoning. The linked activity collection offers examples, but an “unlock” result does not establish collaboration or deeper engagement; inspect each student’s responses and provide an accessible route through the task.
  • Movement Games: Try Scoot, Four Corners, or relay races as non-seated review options. Offer an accessible stationary route, and choose the format for the task rather than a presumed learning style. Matching instruction to a presumed learning style is not supported by strong evidence. Use multiple representations when they serve the objective and remove an identified barrier.
  • Quick checks: Use exit prompts, individual whiteboards without public racing, or an approved response system to collect formative evidence. Protect student responses from public ranking, review privacy and access requirements, and provide a non-digital route.

Use more than one format only when the variation serves a defined practice, evidence, or access need. Novelty and fun are not evidence that the review supports learning.

Customizing Games for Different Subjects

A review format can be adapted when its content, response route, timing, and scoring remain aligned with the subject objective and student access requirements. Examples include:

  • Mathematics: Use individual problem-solving prompts or accessible stations without making speed or movement part of the score unless they are the objective. If Nearpod is considered, use it only after district approval and privacy, age, accessibility, account, and data-retention review, with a non-digital route.
  • Science: Create a themed escape room where “lab results” or “field samples” are locked behind riddles and content questions.
  • English/language arts: Use word bingo, definition matching, or drawing and acting options when they assess the target. Provide an equivalent non-speaking, non-drawing, or non-performance route as needed.
  • History/social studies: Use sourced timeline or comparison prompts. Avoid country trivia that reduces cultures or nations to stereotypes, and assess each student’s evidence rather than competition results.

If local policy permits, a digital response tool can support images, audio, or anonymous checks. Select it for a defined access or practice need, review privacy and age terms, and provide a non-digital route.

Implementation checks

Implementation requires more than selecting a format. Define the objective, individual evidence, access route, privacy limits, timing, and stopping conditions before the activity:

  1. Align with Learning Goals: Choose or design games that directly reinforce your teaching objectives (more tips on matching gameplay with curricular content here).
  2. Separate participation from competition: Remove public ranking, speed, or team pressure unless it is necessary to the objective. Collaboration does not guarantee confidence, and challenge does not create determination.
  3. Provide valid access routes: Plan for required accommodations and differences in communication, technology access, mobility, processing time, and public-response comfort. Do not label students as tech-savvy or shy, and do not infer a hands-on preference.
  4. Teach the procedure: Explain and model the rules, response route, scoring, time, and help process. Check understanding without describing confusion or noise as chaos.
  5. Review the evidence: Return to the learning objective, inspect individual responses, correct errors, and decide the next instructional step. A debrief does not ensure that knowledge is retained.

When devices are limited or not approved, use accessible no-tech options such as individual cards, paper prompts, or tabletop sorting. Do not default to movement games such as Four Corners without a valid stationary route and the required safety and access review.

Choose a format and review the evidence

Choose a review format from the learning target, evidence needed, access requirements, time, and classroom conditions. After the activity, inspect individual responses and revise or remove features that distracted from the intended practice.

For the next review session, choose a game that fits the objective and access needs. Check student responses and work before drawing conclusions about achievement.
