Teacher Action Research Cycles: A Practical Guide

Define a Classroom Inquiry
Teacher action research is a structured inquiry into a question about the teacher's own practice. Define the question, plan a bounded change, collect evidence, and decide what to retain or revise. The cycle supports documented classroom decisions; it does not establish that the change improved instruction.
In classroom action research, the teacher plans an inquiry, collects defined evidence during normal instruction, analyzes it, and decides what to revise. The ERIC-indexed study describes classroom inquiry, reflection, and data-based decision making in teacher education. This approach does not replace required approval, privacy, consent, or research procedures.
Four Phases of an Action Research Cycle
An action research cycle usually includes four phases: planning a focused question, taking a defined action, reviewing evidence, and deciding what to retain or revise. A new cycle should respond to the evidence; improvement is not automatic.
- Plan – Identify a bounded classroom question, a possible explanation, and one change to test. Specify the evidence, time period, access needs, and constraints.
- Act – Implement the defined change within approved classroom procedures. Record departures from the plan and contextual factors that may affect interpretation.
- Observe – Collect data using observation, surveys, student work samples, or assessments. Use measures aligned with the question, compare more than one source when feasible, and document limitations; these steps do not ensure the data represent all student learning.
- Reflect – Analyze your results, consider what worked and what didn’t, and outline adjustments for the next cycle.
Treat the phases as iterative rather than strictly linear. A later cycle should respond to the evidence and limitations recorded in the prior cycle; collaboration with authorized colleagues can test alternative explanations.
Plan the First Cycle
Choose a research design that fits the question and local requirements. Possible evidence includes student work, observation notes, approved surveys, recordings, or rubric-scored tasks. Use only the minimum data needed, define who may access it, and follow applicable approval, consent, privacy, retention, and accessibility procedures.
The teacher-as-researcher resource provides one cycle framework. Apply it to a specific classroom question, document its limits, and distinguish ordinary instructional review from activities that require formal research approval.
Analyze Evidence and Plan a Revision
Organize the evidence in a form suited to the question, such as a table, annotated student-work sample, or participation tally. Check missing data, access conditions, departures from the plan, and reasonable alternative explanations before identifying a pattern or choosing a revision.
Discuss findings with authorized colleagues to test alternative explanations, limitations, and feasible revisions. Record the evidence behind one next-cycle change and protect student information; discussion does not itself establish instructional improvement.
Record null and negative results as well as apparent improvements. A result that does not support the initial idea should inform the next question, not be recast as guaranteed progress toward excellence.
Close the Cycle and Define the Next Question
Closing one cycle can lead to a revised question and plan. In practitioner research, the next cycle should test the revision rather than assume that repetition produces deeper wisdom or sharper strategies.
Linked cycles can produce a record of questions, evidence, decisions, null results, and revisions. Repeated cycles do not guarantee stronger teaching, improved student outcomes, professional growth, or influence on peers.
Close the cycle by recording the question, evidence, limitations, decision, and any next question. Begin another cycle only when a defined uncertainty or revision warrants further evidence.
