Paper session 5: Revise a particular claim

Paper session 5: Revise a particular claim

Mentor Teaching · Teacher directions · 15 October 2026

Plan and prerequisites

45–55 minutes; allow a second supervised block. Planning estimate; adjust to the class.

State a bounded claim, read comparable trials, and connect observations with science. The bridge checks these prerequisites.

Print in this order

1. Prerequisite bridge and initial model evidence

2. New model evidence and blank revision record

3. Guided practice: initial evidence

4. Guided practice: new evidence

5. Independent check: initial record

6. Independent check: new record

Give each independent or new-evidence file only at the stage described below. Keep answers with the teacher.

Teach and demonstrate

Give Initial model first. Record a bounded claim before revealing New model evidence and the blank revision record. Model retaining old evidence, checking changed conditions and deciding whether to retain, narrow, change or leave the claim uncertain. Complete all revision fields. Newest evidence does not automatically win.

Learner work and evidence

Give Guided initial, retain the claim, then Guided new. Repeat the sequence separately with Independent initial and Independent new; do not model the independent case. Collect the original claim, new evidence/conditions, decision, reason and useful next evidence.

Next decision and continuation

Keep original and new records together after each reveal. Choose the matching reteach pair for evidence weighting or comparison conditions. Its fresh recheck is another initial/new pair. Save the later cooling pair for a later opportunity. Continue after the model or guided pair if time runs short.

Matching complete teacher key

Teacher guide pages 1–7 contain the bridge, completed model revision, guided and independent keys; pages 8–13 contain distinct follow-up and later keys.

Access and interpretation

Offer oral, dictated, pointing or labelled responses when they show the same intended reasoning. Keep each task’s quantities, conditions and sources available. Allow extra response paper. A supplied-data explanation does not establish actual construction or testing.
