Apply Source Reading: Write a Public-History Caption

Explain familiar sources for a new reader

Imagine a small exhibit using the Common-area details and report passage in Lessons and Practice. A draft label reads: “From 1775 to 1883, Boston grew because Munson filled every pond. The maps are equally sized surveys. The change improved life for every resident.” Your task is to replace it with a caption a reader can trace to the supplied evidence. This is practice with sources you have studied.

Replace the exhibit caption

Write a caption of four to six sentences. Identify the two map titles or publication years; include one specific detail from each; explain what the report adds about Back Bay; and state a limit. Correct the draft’s claims about every pond, equally sized surveys and every resident.

Plan one further source

If the exhibit also wants to explain the effect on people, name one further source you would seek and one question you would ask of it.
