Teach learners to find change per input unit, recover a starting amount from nonzero observations, connect a rule to a table and graph, and distinguish greater rate from greater output. Earlier proportional-relationship teaching already explains nonzero starts. This collection adds finding and using the two parameters when the rate is not supplied.
Fit and preparation
A selected U.S. Grade 8 mathematics supplement. Learners should name two quantities, interpret per one, read coordinates, and explain why a nonzero total start is not proportional. Subtraction, signed changes and the meaning of y = mx + b are taught here. Fraction and decimal calculations may need additional local support. All numerical models and learner statements are constructed teaching examples; no experiment or learner upload is needed.
- Read the teacher guide. Use paper, pencil and the supplied coordinate grids. A calculator may support arithmetic when the local target is reasoning; record that support.
- If prerequisite reasoning is unclear, use the earlier proportional relationship lesson and teacher guide included unchanged in the ZIP’s foundations folder. Keep teacher answers separate. Use the earlier collection’s own entry route when more teaching is needed.
- Teach Rate from changes, Build a rule and graph, then Compare rate and output. Each contains modeling and complete learner practice. Select pages by the actual target rather than assigning every file at once.
A useful prior route
Equal groups and measured shares prepare quantity meaning; equivalent ratios and per-one work prepare labeled rates; proportional relationship teaching prepares table/rule/graph and domain reasoning. This is a selected mathematical-relationships route, not a complete course or coverage of every topic in Grades 5–8.
