Reading Starting Point

A Place for the Cards

Original fictional story

Mina was helping set up a paper-model display. Each model needed a card with its title. At first she put all the blank cards in a box behind a large model. Jae lifted the model twice to reach the box. ‘I cannot reach the cards without moving this,’ he said. Mina moved the box to the front edge of the table. ‘Now we can take cards without shifting any models,’ she said. Three cards were green and three were blue. Mina wrote the first title carefully.

1. Read the question: Why did Mina move the box of cards? Does it ask for the cards’ colours, the box’s new position, or the reason for the move? Write or point to your choice.

2. Answer the question in your own words. Choose one story detail and explain how it helps answer the question.

3. The cards were green and blue. That detail is true. Does it help explain why Mina moved the box? Explain.
