The Puzzle Table

Original fictional story

Evan was making a puzzle picture with a friend. He spread the pieces on a bare table beside an open book. Whenever the book was moved, some pieces slid toward the table's edge. Evan put a cloth on the table and placed the pieces on it. ‘I want the pieces to stay together instead of sliding away while we move the book,’ he said. The picture on the puzzle showed a boat. Evan had already found two corner pieces.

The Rehearsal Notes

Original fictional story

Elio's group had written directions for a short play. Mali read ‘Put the props on the bench’ and wrote ‘Which bench?’ on a card. Elio added ‘the long bench by the window’ to that direction. Jo read ‘Enter after the sound’ and wrote ‘Which sound?’ Elio added ‘after the bell rings’. Elio left the question cards beside the revised directions while the group read them again. He had brought a new blue folder. The group had not yet tried the revised directions in a rehearsal.

1. What might Elio be trying to improve? Give an inference supported by this scene.

2. Use two different details. Explain how each supports your inference.

3. Someone says, “The group will never be confused again.” What is still unknown?
