Talk About Familiar Groups and Shares

A Short Mathematics Conversation

Use the lesson’s 20 counters and 2 m ribbon shared among 3 projects only after your child has practised these examples in class. Ask for the lesson pages if useful.

  • Talk in a language and response mode that are comfortable. Your child may point to a drawing or explain aloud.
  • Ask: What is the total? What does the group number count? What are you finding?
  • Ask: What does one whole meter mean in this drawing? How do the three equal shares use all the ribbon?
  • Let your child explain their own idea. If a question is confusing, pause and tell the teacher which wording or part was difficult.
  • A few minutes is enough. You do not need equipment, a score or a teaching-group decision.

Keep later classroom checks with the teacher. If helpful, share what your child could explain and what support you used.
