During a board game with her younger cousin, Tess reached across the board and moved his piece. “That path is quicker,” she said. When he pointed to a different path, she shook her head and moved on to her own turn.
The next evening, her cousin asked to choose his own moves. Tess pulled her hand back from his piece. “All right. Tell me when you're finished,” she said. He chose the longer path. Tess waited and moved only her own piece. They did not finish before bedtime, but she placed the unfinished game on a shelf instead of changing his move.
On Saturday, Tess played the same game with two friends. When Jun studied the board, Tess began, “You should go—” and pointed. Jun said, “Give me a minute.” Tess lowered her hand and waited. Later she interrupted Jun again, then stopped and said, “I did it again. You choose.”
After lunch, Tess and her cousin started a different game with picture cards. This time, she asked, “Do you want an idea, or do you want time?” He asked for time. Tess stacked her own cards while he decided. When he asked for an idea on a later turn, she described two choices without touching his cards. She still spoke quickly when she described them. No one in the story says how she plays on every other day.
Explain your evidence
G6R02-T1
Explain how the character changes across this story. Include one accurate early word or action and at least one accurate later word or action. Explain what the comparison suggests about the character's choices or actions, distinguish that change from a change in circumstances, and state one reasonable limit on what the story establishes. Quote or paraphrase precisely. Use only the story; a permanent trait or a private motive needs evidence the story may not provide. Consider whether any later detail complicates your explanation. Include it if it changes how strongly you can state the claim.
