Read the actual passage and response before choosing teaching. Consider whether the student accessed the text and understood the task. The four features are observations, not a summed mastery score.
| Feature | Look for / interpret carefully |
|---|---|
| Whole-passage point | A complete-sentence important point supported across the passage, broader than one small detail. Different defensible wording is welcome. |
| Relevant details | At least two accurate details that explain the point. Ask why they matter; a true but minor detail alone may not support the selected point. |
| Concise own-word summary | A coherent 2–3-sentence response combining the point and details without unnecessary repetition. Do not penalize a shared title or necessary term, or equate polished handwriting with understanding. |
| Objective accuracy | No added opinion, invented event or distorted cause/result; important limitations are preserved. A fluent summary can still overclaim. |
A supported response is useful evidence about what the learner can do with that support. Record it separately from an independent response. A longer accurate response may call for compression practice rather than a conclusion that the central idea is missing.
